TOPIC: rent your barge for a week in Brittany?

rent your barge for a week in Brittany? 11 Jun 2018 18:13 #99341

David,

What do you mean by "the westernmost section ..."? If you mean the bit from Josselin to Lorient via Pontivy, this is now open and there was significant dredging between Jo and Po a couple of years ago. However, if you mean the bit from the sea near Brest towards the first summit, this is still unreachable from inland as although quite a few locks west of Guerledan lake have been reopened, and the navigatation authority is now more friendly to this bit's being navigated, navigation over the summit remains closed. And, of course, there is no lift yet to bypass the Guerledan dam (although pressure for one is growing, and to reopen the length of canalised Blavet from Pontivy up to the dam, which would be very easy; there's just no destination attraction at the moment).

Also, the navigation authority is becoming more aware of the potential of the lock houses.

There is a very active canal society pushing for full reopening -- "Les Amis du Canal 22" (which Google. I didn't know that the French canals are numbered?) AC22 deserves our individual and DBA support IMHO.

This is a very worthwhile waterway -- the presently unnavigable bit is particularly attractive.

Hello Adrian, et al

I know this is a very old post, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a member, or has heard of anyone, traveling the westernmost section of the Nantes a Brest. I don;t currently own a barge, but was considering a home base on the western section. Lots of interesting lock houses for sale in the western section, for very low prices.

Cheers

Indeed. When two barges visiting by sea navigated this bit, the voyage made the newspapers as they were the first for ages!

Sadly, the only way to arrive at the Lorient to Pontivy route from St Martin sur Oust is by way of the sea route to Lorient. That Blavet River route is cut off. by the break in the route just before Pontivy.
I am hopeful I will be contacted by someone with a barge that is moored in Lorient for the winter.
Thank you for your message.

I don't know about timings and distances - you would definitely have to return the boat back to St Martin. Locaboat's Penichette boats do have a passing, if somewhat remote, resemblance to barges.

There are no possibilities for the completely separated western section of the Nantes à Brest between Chateaulin and Carhaix.
So far as Pontivy-Lorient is concerned the closest self-drive base is Locaboat's at St Martin-sur-Oust. There is one (true) hotel barge in Brittany - Libje - her route is between St Martin and Rohan.

My husband and I have rented barges for the past ten years, but the rental companies often don't have bases/routes on sections we would particularly like to travel. If anyone is interested in renting their personally-owned barge to us for a week so that we could travel between Lorient and (very near) Pontivy or between Chateaulin and (near) Carhaix-Plouguer, then I would appreciate a reply.
Or, if you know of a barge rental company that offers those routes then I would be grateful for their contact information.
Thank you,
-- Ellen
