TOPIC: Canal des Ardennes closed

Canal des Ardennes closed 13 Jun 2018 22:20 #99364

That's awfully depressing, travelled that canal a couple of years ago and hardly saw another boat.

I'm glad you got the warning in time, John. Although news like this tends to travel through the system at amazing speed.

WARNING: the Canal des Ardennes is closed until further notice following the destruction of lock 21 Neuville-Day (one of the long flight of 27 locks on the Aisne side of the summit level) occurring early morning on Tuesday 12 June, after the very heavy rainfall on Monday.
Ardennes Nautisme in Pont-à-Bar posted this spectacular photo, supplied by VNF. The parallel Neuville stream burst its banks and spilled into the canal, which had no chance of conveying the flow over the lock-gates. The control cabin has collapsed, and the upper part of that lock wall has been washed away. This is a canal that VNF was planning to stop operating; Mother Nature has given them an excuse. It will be a hard struggle to get this link into full working order again.
