Whats the cost per month out of curiosity.

No, I'm not staying on board - the boat is not designed for winter living, in particular it has poor central heating.

I've left it with a boat yard between Maastricht and Maasbracht this winter as I need to have new antifouling and anodes, plus a few other jobs. The yard has no moorings so it will be out of the water this winter. The cost for 6 months is €1000 + VAT including lift out and re-launch for my 15 m vessel.

I had thought of leaving it with a large Maasbracht marina where the options are in-the-water, outside on the hard, or in a heated boathouse so no need to winterise. However they were not convincing when it came to getting my list of jobs done.

Last winter) and 2 previous winters) I left the boat near Seneffe in Belgium for the ridiculously low price of €420 inc tax, but that was in-the-water and no workshop facilities at all.

PM me if you need more details.

Peter

Tony

This is a very long trip with stoppages currently posted on all the obvious and relatively non-commercial routes. I don't know your reasons for SJDL as your destination, but have you considered staying in NL for the winter, or Belgium? I hope this isn't a silly question but there are berths available in the Maasbracht area which is relatively easy to get to and probably also near Seneffe in BE which would give you a head start towards SJDL if you can wait until the spring. I'm doing just that myself.

Oops, Hi Tony!
I constructed the text offline (otherwise you can never know when you'll lose a reply to the vagaries of the Internet and the Forum) without your name in front of me - so hit random keys and then forgot to edit your name in for the reply after I pasted it in. Of course, we can't edit a post once it's been let fly.

Apologies!

Hi sadfdsf,

Big journey this late in the year. I’m no expert so I’ll give a PC Navigo solution and some comments as a starter and let those better informed add their $0.02 worth while correcting my information.

I set PCN with a start point of Arnhem (you didn’t give your start point). I set the route criterion for fastest (it’s late in the year to be taking the long tourist routes) and I avoided the Meuse because we don’t know when it will reopen to allow a route such as yours and the Rhine because I'm not sure of your certifications. The route is almost entirely commercial but to use non-commercial waterways will significantly extend the duration of the trip.

This gives a route (highly summarised, i’m not going to list every waterway) that takes you down the western Netherlands across the Westerschelde eventually to Gent and then up the Schelde to eventually pass down the Canal du Nord, up the Aisne and lastly along the Canal entre Champagne and Bourgogne.

The timing I gave PCN assumed you could make an average speed of 10 kph and you could make the heroic effort of cruising every day from 9 - 5. Almost certainly an underestimate because of having to find suitable moorings, if you started next Monday (15th) you might make it by 7th November.

I’m not sure of the travel restrictions, although as most of the route is on commercial waterways, these are generally open. However, you would (according to PCN) have to negotiate for travel on the Canal entre Champagne and Bourgogne.

I’ve included the map that was produced by the excellent planning program, PC Navigo, with these criteria (shortest, start and end dates, 9-5, 10 kph). Other routes are possible, probably will take longer.

Good luck.
Ian

Does anyone have reasonably up to date suggestions on a route south to St Jean De losne from the River Ijssel in Netherlands .

We show the route via mass/Meuse / canalMeuse/canal la marne a saone and viable .
However speaking with other cruisers here in NL that have recently come through , they are saying either closed due to low water or season shut down and had to re route a lot

We dont mind which route we go but prefer to stay on smaller canals rather than commercial routes.
