Having lived afloat for 45 years and being aware of how difficult it can get, especially for those new to the system, I was determined to do my bit to try to stop the naïve and gullible houseboat buyer from being ripped off. So I drew up a checklist for houseboat buyers, and that's now on the River Thames Society website (www.riverthamessociety.org.uk under magazine, just scroll down), free for anyone to download. The focus is on the bigger boat on the river, where the situation is rather different from those able to 'continuous cruise' on CRT waters

I am now following that up with a talk as part of the Tidefest programme which is being billed as 'Buying a houseboat on the Thames and understanding the Risks and Pitfalls'. I am hoping to expose some of the scams that there have been and are indeed still going on. The talk is at Chiswick Pier at 3pm on Sunday 10th September, following immediately after a showing of the 'Life Afloat' film. Tidefest is making a charge for those who are neither members of the RTS or of Chiswick Pier Trust - £3 for my talk, £5 for the talk and film. Although they say book tickets via Tidefest 2017, I'm sure it will be OK to turn up on the day
