Best practice would be to try and balance significant side loadings on the crank by siting the alternators at as near as possible 180 degrees to each other relative to drive axis, I.e. opposite sides of the engine. Daf do stress this point.
(also no significant vertical loads).

There may not be enough room for it, but I had a pair of contra-rotating alternators buckled end-to-end with the pulley wheel in the middle, driven by just the one belt. Worked extremely well for me.

I'm thinking about putting a second alternator on a DAF575, with limited space (as that end is buried beneath the wheelhouse.. Can anyone post a photo of an example installation so I can see if it's feasible?
