TOPIC: Painting whole barge above the waterline

Painting whole barge above the waterline 04 May 2020 17:02 #115716

I used Jotun 87 Aluminium as primer followed by 2 coats XP and final coat had International Anti Slip additive in the mix on decks. Coachroof sides were left gloss. 87Al needed thinning to roller, so the Smartpack would probably be better. The XP has worn well, however AX paint is a tougher paint and probably worth the extra on the decks. Bought all paint from Bayside Marine, ebay shop.
With some effort, I managed to get the specific gravity of the respective A and B parts so I could mix quantities by weight which is far more accurate than by ratio. Especially very small quantities of a few grams for touching up.
I now find that Jotun have produced a sheet to mix paints by weight!!
I used 4" mohair rollers and had the mixed paint inside a paint bucket with a lid. Sun and breeze, breeze particularly so, evaporate the solvent quite quickly. I also tried to avoid painting in the heat of the day and where possible followed the shade.

Always worth having a look on e bay, there are so many varieties of Jotun that you would have to check but there is some old stock on there at the moment, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jotun-Steelmaster-60-120-60WB-paint-20Litre-cans/352900504676?hash=item522a825c64:m:mMYQQ_MmVp3Bd72t8-qQepg

Hi All,
We have a 38m Dutch barge on the Thames and are using the lockdown as a chance to repaint the deck. I have seen some good posts on sanding and rollers so thanks for that everyone. I would really appreciate some advice on the paint. We are looking at a 2 pack Jotan XP with Jotan smartpack undercoat. This is quite expensive!
Can anyone help with advice as to a different set of paints that are as good but cheaper? And any recommended paint suppliers to go to for quotes?

Thanks in Advance

Saul
