Hi Pete

If I read your post correctly you mean when living aboard, so this may be comparing apples and pears. We generally heated Nooit Gedacht, 21m Luxemotor, with a Kabola boiler through 7 radiators, at a constant setting of 8°C to keep its toes warm and during occasional weekend visits in winter, when we turned it up to 22°C during the day, 14°C at night. This produced a usage of approx. 500 l of red over a 6 month period, I'd say, though I never measured our consumption exactly.

Here on an 18.5m barge, almost everywhere heated, about 30l red per week or about 850l per winter season that hasn't been TOO cold, and we do pay a bit of attention to our heat behavior
Boiler fairly new, Kabola Ecoline 12kw

Expensive stuff indeed.

Today GNR (Red Diesel) at the fuel pontoon Saint Jean de Losne 1.62€ a litre. Double the last lot I brought.  I'm glad that I don't use a great deal.

Not as bad as gas! We have actually discussed spending more time on the ship this winter because the costs for our house are so far rather a more painful, and we are only heating part of it!

Thanks Balliol, that's exactly the sort of response i was after. Expensive stuff heating boats with diesel.

I don’t keep a careful record and I don’t think we have been on board during any real cold snaps for a few years but I would estimate a maximum of 50 litres a week for our 30 metre ship in present day winters, so your estimate of 40 is probably realistic. That is running the heating/hot water all day but not during sleeping hours.

This is a bit of a 'how long is a bit of string' but I'm after some expectation settings for  fuel consumption of our central heater.
We've not lived on Fairhaven for any real cold stuff but this year have someone staying on her over winter in Moissac.

We have a Kabola diesel central heater with radiators throughout the boat which works well and warms quickly.  As a guide for the last week she used about 40L of diesel, with the temperatures around 0 overnight and about 10deg maximums.  What do others find fuel usage is when using central heaters during winter on a 25m barge ?    I know it will vary enourmously depending on type of barge, insulation, occupants, temp set points,  other heating sources etc but just want some other data points ?   I'm after total usage over a week/month or season.

rgds.. Pete
