Last week we travelled Pont a Bar To Bar Au Bac. We have a 1.1 meter draft. From Pont a Bar to Le Chesne the water was clear however the silt caused us to squirrel around at times.
The Moncton Flight took a full day plus an hour the next day due to lock issues.
Rilly sur Aisne to Berry Au Bac had dreadlock type weed on the edges however the centre was ok Due to the once a day commercials crawling at 3km/hr through the silt.
the marina at Reims is closed however the pontoons are still there , we were not challenged when we spent three nights there last weekend.

We plan on the same route south from  NL in July of this year after we could not get through and turned back in 2022.  Can you let us know how you get on.  Specifically I am interested in the depths in the Cuts south of the Ardennes Canal towards Sedan.  With the higher flows on the Meuse I am wondering if there will be increased silting of the south ends of the cuts where they rejoin the river.  Also if there is enough width from the bushes and trees growing from the sides.  On the canal des ardennes we ran out of water and had to turn back but I am hoping to get through this year with the winter rains but it is likely still too early to tell what conditions will be like in July.

Even if we have to turn back the Ardennes is beautiful and make the trip worth it, so I am trying to get a sense of whether we will make it to the mosel and be able to do a circular route or if it will be up and down the meuse like we did in 2022.

Well, we cruised south from Sneek starting April 19 to the French border and learned that the Muese is closed south of Verdun to a lack of weed control.  So far, no word on when they plan to open the route to Toul.  I’ll see what I can learn during the next few days.

We now plan to hit the Ardennes toward Reims.  Does anyone know if the weed issue was or is solved in Rethel?  We were there in 2019 and it was really bad.  The rest of the Ardennes was beautiful with great canal and path upgrades.

Thanks for the update.  If you would, keep posting as you cruise south.

I am also keeping an eye on the Rhine flows as we plan to cruise up the Mosel to Koblenz.  I am guessing we will arrive near Givet about April 25th.   Have you heard anything about stoppages or issues going up the steps to Toul?

With all that water the weed situation is hopefully minor for now.

Yes, we will plan to top off the tanks before we get into Belgium.  For the last few years I have filled up with gtl as often as I can.  No issues and cleaner running.

Anders, we are at Givet with the river closed to navigation as the is running at 350 cubic meters a second or 2.5 km/hr. So there is a lot of water upstream. It may re-open on Monday.
As an aside we purchased white diesel from Tullermans bunkership at Maasbracht at€1.55/litre cash 10 days ago  Further into France  it’s €1.96 cash currently from the road tanker.

We cruised South on the Meuse last year in May from Belgium to the Marne au Rhin. There were 2, maybe 3 really bad patches of weed south of Sedan, but each was for only 2 to 3 kilometers each time, they were being worked on.

Tim.

Thank you Peter and Sharon for the information.  I’ll keep checking as we get closer.

For fun, I added a picture of our boat in the new lock on the Ardennes from 2021.

There as an Avis this morning from VNF warning of "siltation" on the Meuse between lock Tres Fountaines (PK 7 lock 58) and lock Dom le Mesnil (PK 94 lock 40) and suggesting there have been "groundings".  The depth is limited to 1.5m they say.   This seems a bit odd as the Meuse, at least in Belgium, has been in flood on and off for months, but maybe this stretch has particular issues.  Anyway, at 1.3 you should be OK at this point but I would keep an eye on the Avis for this area as you get closer to your journey.  And try to stay in the channel when traveling.

Anders - I have no first-hand knowledge of the state of weed on that route now, but we travelled from NL to Nancy in 2019 and experienced only light weed during the months of April and May.  I doubt you'll have problems as the weed problem seems to be more severe a little later in the year.  Despite the abundance of rain now, you seem to be planning well in getting the Canal de le Meuse section done before water shortages may take effect.

Have you considered continuing through Nancy and taking the Sarre to join the Mosel near Trier and then on to Koblenz?  I ask only because my co-owner considered this river rather more attractive that the French Moselle and one of his very favourite waterways, despite the relatively few mooring places.

Hello All

We plan to cruise from Friesland down the Maas to Toul then up the Mosel and home on the Rhine starting about April 20.

Does anyone have insights to the water levels and weeds from Verdun to Toul?  I am guessing we will arrive at Verdun May 1.

Thanks.  Anders.  We are in a 1980 DeRuiter 14.5 meter kotter with 1.3 draft.
