Hi Andy,

Thanks. That is an extremely useful document. Much is intuitive and I am pleased to see that by and large we have been doing it right, including some junctions that I have sometimes wondered about such as the turn from the Hollands Diep into the Dordste Kil, because as you say even if you watch what the commercials are doing it is not always a good guide to the safest or most proper course. I have sometimes been chided by the crew for missing a left turn when all I wanted to do was go beyond it a bit to make my turn in less cluttered water.

I suspect I will print off and laminate the junctions that I most often use. Even if you think you know them well the blown up charts, VHF info etc are most useful all in one place. Also, if there wee to be an incident, I guess possession of the "instructions" (provided you have followed them) will always score points with the police.

I note that on at least some occasions the notes suggest that pleasure craft should minimise the use of VHF, but I tend to differ if there is any amount of traffic about. A call to the correct port station often elicits useful help, e.g. an instruction to other ships to allow you to merge and cross in a planned sequence.

A useful guide to the preferred course through the more complex NL junctions

It is only advisory - so don't be surprised to find that some commercials have their own idea on how turn / cross-over! Been caught that way in the past.

You don't need a barge to join - a dream of boating in Europe will do'. See www.barges.org
