TOPIC: Nivernais Canal and Chablis/Canal de Bourgogne

Nivernais Canal and Chablis/Canal de Bourgogne 29 Apr 2020 13:34 #115613

I do twitch nowadays as I approach having almost touched the underside in near-spate conditions.....

I watched as the gangplank (holding the cover on the bikes on the rear roof) took off like the arrow from a longbow at Agincourt and, by a couple of centimetres, missed spearing the 'Voice of Strictly Come Dancing' to the bridge upright. Not the way to treat your guest!

He's not forgotten either.......

Mike

I think it's an angle of attack issue Mike with the left bank pinching in upstream of the bridge. I attach a picture I took showing the limited clearance!

The Nivernais does have its challenges as does the Somme. We are specifying sternthrusters for any future builds at which point the Natalia can concentrate on Champagne-Marne where there are fewer slalom courses!

Seeing Natalia coming through arch 3 of the Pont Paul Bert got me thinking. Isn't that the narrowest and least draft?

I take my hat off to Pete for getting Natalia through Cour Barree and out the far end with that tight turn. I once had to rescue a 15 metre boat and escort them back to port after they failed to get through there in the wind!

Oh to be aboard!

More coverage here of the Nivernais between Auxerre and Bailly - youtu.be/pzc8GQmA4mw

Pete Jenner at the helm, happily in much better health but like the rest of us fed up with being stuck at home!

I have seen posts elsewhere saying this is carefully managed to keep the sections without boats clear and the locks under less stress. Apparently Auxerre has plenty of water as have the reservoirs.

Lovely videos and nice to see Door Maas cruising into Vermenton. We were supposed to be doing that this week!!!!

Ironic given the lockdown and that the VNF have let this happen to the Yonne and NIvernais...

I don't know how well this link will work on here, but I've just received these two short promotion videos from Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Tourisme.
I think it is meant well, though it is perhaps rather rubbing one's nose in it in the present circumstances :)
