Further to my last the post by Steve Morton in Stoppages Hazards and Levels points out there are two unsheduled stoppages each of four and a half hours in the afternoons of 11th and 26 th September in the pound above écluse de Landrecies for a canoe activity.

Hi Martin et al,

As Colin has said the 15th September is the date that navigation changes from "free" to "on demand". Nothing about closure. However, there is a chômage at Maubeuge on the 4th October until the 4th November and another chômage at l’écluse n°4 de Berlaimont à l’écluse n°3 de Sassegnies from 11th November to the 15th November. Maybe your éclusier confused 11th November with 11th September???

Martin,

At Origny SB, you must have lunch at L'Oree des Collines in nearby Neuvillette. 15 min walk from moorings and great "Menu d'oeuvrier". Two choices - take it or leave it!!
Great value - beers, wine, 4 courses, espresso - €44 for 2.

It's a case of ten green bottles... Ten of us wanted to gather there when I mooted the idea in May but circumstances prevented nine of us from making it. Well done Colin and Ali for representing DBA. Even the weather thwarted efforts of entente cordiale but at least Francine Kimpe, Présidente de Canal SET paid a short visit before the heavens opened.

Cheers,

We wuz there.
Unfortunately no other boats were and a healthy forecast orage on Saturday after tea and early evening scotched a planned walking visit by the Sambre Eau Thiérache (SET) team. The President did pop along for a short hello, but not to keen to continue walking after the rain started, so wisely departed.
I took the opportunity to don foul weather gear, and scrub the decks in the torrential rain.
Vadencourt mooring fine and no street lights, so good for star gazing. But still an orange glow from nearby towns.
Eclusiers all along have been great and we have been beneficiaries of their over productive gardens.
A shame really. But great to get the route open.
Still, as the President said "another time".

We have just left Lobbes, nice mooring for 5€ a night including water and electric but you need to inform them in the adjacent office building with access thro the works yard, shame about the very noisy geese, Thuin appears to have unsavory characters on the mooring at night.

We paid €18 for 15 metres plus €3 for unmetered electricity. I don't think there's a limit as such but it's a boat club with limited space for visitors and you'd probably end up breastfed on one of their 2 tjalks.

Does anyone know if they strictly enforce the length limit for visitors at Landelies and also if the charges are by now well in excess of the €29 quoted in 2009?

Sorry Bob. Not sure we actually said we would come but, for clarity and as things have turned out having only just got out to our ship, we will not be cruising that far, if anywhere, this year.

Hello,

I wrote on the 2nd August confirming the date of the proposed gathering at Vadencourt to be the weekend of the 4th and 5th August and asked members who had expressed interest (and others, of course) to signify their intended attendance here.

So far I've only heard from two members concerning three boats out of the ten or so who expressed interest back in April. While I appreciate things change and, for Goodness sake, this dastardly virus has made us all make changes in our lives so fundamentally. And some members have been fortunate to navigate the Sambre-Oise axe already. Indeed Terry Hawkes has been very helpful in checking out the 'large' or 'wide' for possible mooring just upstream of the aqueduct.

Anyway... please please post here if you can make it and if, of course, you want to make it to Vadencourt for the w/e of 4/5 September.

Best wishes,

Bob

Thank you, that's kind of you. Another kind lady in Landelies boat club lent me a copy yesterday and I scanned the pages. So, we're sorted thanks.

Incidentally, cruising up to Thuin today, we are amazed by the beauty of this river.

Hi Bob, we’re now at Peronnes and continuing in Sambre direction. My best guess is that we will make Vadencourt about 25th aug at our current rate of progress, due to poor weather we have kept moving more than we ordinarily might, not much lazing in the sun this year! If the rain ever stops we will get slower as we will stop longer so we might be there at the right time. If we arrive early I’m not sure we will stay ten days or more………..thanks for all your efforts with this.

Could be. Planning to leave Douai on about 14 Aug, via Tournai to fill with some HVO. Not sure how many 4/5 hour driving days it will be, but 3 weeks could be about right??

Hello all interested in gathering together at the Vadencourt aqueduct. When I first floated the idea there were about ten members keen to meet up and say a DBA thank you to Canal SET and others who have campaigned to get the waterway re-opened. I am now suggesting a definite date of the first weekend in September. That is Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th. Clearly boats may gather in advance of the weekend and even stay on afterwards.

I will not be there as I have serious personal matters to attend to but I will write to Francine Kimpe, President of Canal SET once I know how many will definitely be there.

So, Please post here if you will definitely be at Vadencourt for the weekend of 4/5 September 2021 and we'll take it from there.

Best wishes to all,

Bob

Rob - Fluviacarte 24 Picardie does include the Sambre and the canal Sambre a l'Oise. The edition I have is from 2011.
Do not get the Editions du Breil Picardie (20) because it does not include the Sambre or the Sambre a l'Oise.

Overnight at Vadencourt, 7 boats in total: 4 heading downstream and 3 upstream

There has obviously a lot of money been spent on bridges and locks as well as the new viaduct.
It is also obvious why they have restricted the draught to 1.6m. The mud can be seen nearly to the surface on the inside of many of the bends and shallow where side streams enter the canal.
There were still problems regulating the water level on the summit pound - about 30cm low, but the feed is now working again.

For those with long boats or over 4.5m wide then please take care at the swing bridge at Tupigny (the lift bridge is OK). This bridge is being rebuilt and is currently operated by the workmen with two ropes! So a bit hit and miss. It is also not clear when it is fully open as when the bridge is fully open it overhangs the fendering substantially at both ends and is not in line with the bank with an openeing of about 5.3m. Be careful.

The positive is that everyone pleased to see boats both locals and VNF workers.

The official hours are 09.00 to 19.30 continuous, but the reality is that they sign on first so not at the locks until 09.15 and they have a lunch hour 12.30 - 13.30. Various other boats commented that they would prefer an earler start especially with the lunch stop.

Good sailing

I am moored today at Berlaimont having bought my (very) cheap vignette on Friday.
Note the office is open Monday to Friday 09.30 - 11.30 and 13.30 - 16.30; ask for Jean-Jacques.

Filled up with diesel at Maclet & Fils at Km10.8 in Belgium - fuel hose handed over the wall. Takes credit cards.

Various issues with low water in some sections as the water levels have not yet stabilised after the floods but all working OK.

Stopped today as there is a problem on the top level of the canal with control of the water level. Expected to be solved by tomorrow.

Agreed Peter.
I did, immediately after my last post, send copies of our posts to Noordersoft with entreaties that they fix the S-O and prepare for the C-P. Just keep reminding them I guess.

Deborah Keir wrote: I was having trouble planning a cruise along the Sambre - Oise in PC Navigo so I contacted their help desk. Apparently you have to replace a file in order to be able to plan a route along the Sambre-Oise, the updates wont fix it and reinstalling the latest wont fix it. The help desk sent me a file and instructions for updating so that you can use it for that stretch of water. So if you also have this problem I suggest you get in touch with them - they got back to me within a day.

I fear that this problem with PC Navigo may be partly my fault! In 2017, I found that Navigo was still offering this waterway as a through route between Belgium and France despite having been closed for many years - and likely to remain so for many more. Discussions with Noordersoft revealed that this couldn't be fixed simply by a permanent Closure mark, so it was decided to make the waterway as 2 no-through-route ones, thus removing the green section (indicating navigable) where the closure existed. A Patch was announced in May 2018 allowing existing Navigo users to make this change, and subsequent versions were amended to show this as 2 non-connected waterways. Presumably the new patch allows restoration of the waterway as a through route.

Incidentally there's another long-term closed waterway that was also made into 2 no through routes at the same time, so the this problem may occur when this is restored as a through route - the Canal de Pommerueul which had been closed since 1992 and (certainly in 2017) with no prospect of re-opening in the foreseeable future.

We’re planning to set off early next week, hoping to cruise north-south which means we need to pass through Peronnes, Mons, Strepi, Seneffe, Charleroi. Has anybody been that way or heard how that route is since the flooding? Don’t want to head into trouble when we could go the other way if needs be and cruise south-north. Any info gratefully received……

Today we made a return visit to écluse Berlaimont to hunt down the elusive discounted vignette. We had telephoned and agreed a rendez vous with .Jean-Jacques who is a lock keeper there and possibly the only one who will deal with the purchase of vignettes. If you go it will make the issuing of the new, heavily discounted vignette easier if you have last years old vignette with you, it seems to make it much easier to find you in the computer. We have been issued with an invoice and one copy of a freedom vignette which Jean-Jacques assures me is toutes les navigations. You cannot pay with a card, has to be cash and have change with you as he doesn’t have any.

I am well on my way to the Sambre - Oise, but now stopped by the high water in Marcinelle. It may be a bit depressing (just like Rotherham in 1980) but a good secure mooring when river closed to navigation and have received a Avis that it is closed in France as well.

Whilst on my way up The Sambre I noticed the attached sign in Charleroi at Ecluse Marcinelle advising that the Sambre - Oise is still definetely closed!

Perhaps someone with better French than mine could contact French/Belgium navigations to get it changed?
I suspect there may also be a similar notice at Ecluse No.1 on the Canal Charleroi - Bruxelles

Thank you, Sue, for explaining the situation here. I am sorry to be a bit behind the curve but I have a very poorly Bobbie who needs all the time I can give her.

Carole and Barry - my apologies for not getting back to you but I am pleased you have that attestation.

My understanding from my telephone call to Matthew at the Berlaimont office is that this 90% discount for a vignette covers navigation of all the VNF waterways but must be used on the Sambre/Oise axe. Which is why Carole and Barry have to commit to going to Berlaimont and buying one.

Since I was told something different when I spoke to Claire Sénécourt I feel I need to add the rider that anyone wishing to avail themselves of this offer needs to telephone Berlaimont before making an appointment to visit.

Best wishes,

Bob

Yes kind of but it’s not certain or helpful I’m afraid. We went to .Berlaimont last Friday and saw Michel who is a colleague of Matthew whom Bob spoke to but wasn’t there at the time. Michel explained to us that the régisseur (Jean- Jacques) who apparently is the only one there who can sell vignettes is on holiday until July 19th. So we are planning to return there on July 20th. Carole and Barrie (Silk Purse) went this week and came away with an attestation that declares they want a vignette and will return on July 30 to pay for it. so we are still unclear about whether we can use this heavily discounted vignette for travel throughout France or whether it is only going to be valid on the Sambre - Oise route. Not a lot of help so far, sorry,

Right! Read to the end...

I received a telephone call from Claire Senecourt yesterday and had a very good chat as we hadn't met for some considerable time... latterly because of covid but previously due to her maternity leave.

First of all I have to say understanding French on the telephone can be troublesome and I blame myself for talking too quickly in French which seems to give the signal to talk nineteen to the dozen back to me. Doucement is my favourite word. Notwithstanding that I believe I understood Claire to tell me the 90% vignette is only valuable to navigate the Sambre-Oise waterway. Furthermore, I asked (by way of clarification) if a member might buy a short vignette online or wherever to get them to the Sambre-Oise waterway and then rely on this special vignette for as long as they wanted to enjoy that waterway.

That was yesterday. A few minutes ago I decided to call Berlaimont and had a good chat with Matthew there who, it has to be said was prompted by another in the background. I was told, unequivocally that the 90% discount vignette is valuable for cruising all VNF's waters and, furthermore, members may drive by road to Berlaimont to buy one.

Just to check this out I will ask a member to try this out and will report back the result.

Best wishes and bonne-route.

I tried several times and failed to get in touch by telephone with Claire Senecourt, Tourism supremoe at N-P-de-C, so have sent the following email (translation below):

Bonjour Claire,

Bob

Hello Claire,

I have tried to contact you by telephone as it would be nice to talk to each other after such a long time. You, or your department, have sent a very interesting email yesterday about the Sambre-Oise axe and I have received several messages from DBA members planning to navigate that waterway from different parts of Europe. The 90% discount on a vignette is very interesting.

Is it possible to drive by car to Berlaimont, from, say Douai or Arras, to get a vignette to then navigate to the Sambre-Oise axe?

Is there another VNF office on the Chauny side of the waterway to buy a vignette at the same discount?

I am planning a gathering of our barges later in the summer at Vadencourt to celebrate the opening of the waterway. I have been in touch with Mme Francine Kimpe, Mme President of the association Canal SET and she has been talking to the mayor of Vadencourt.

See you soon and very best wishes,

Bob

Thank you for offering to call VNF Berlaimont, Colin. There are others wishing to take advantage of the offer so we all look forward to you posting what you find. If I may suggest... do mention that you are planning to navigate the Sambre-Oise axe but you have to get there first. You might also mention we, as DBA, are intending to have a gathering of a number of our vessels at Vadencourt to celebrate the opening and to say thank you to those who have worked to enable this to happen.

Yes, a very strong and sensible incentive to using the re-opened canal, if we can get to our boats to use them.

I read the notice to mean that the discount was available to boats entering the system from Belgium, presuming that Berlaimont is the first VNF office on the Sambre after the border.

> Wow. That is a good deal and well worth the drive to Berlaimont from Douai.

A bargain indeed. Perhaps worth calling beforehand to make sure they'll be selling to car-based boaters as it may be a special deal solely for boaters actually using the canal. They do say "private boaters using the route".

Hello Terry,

If you are on your way north towards Vadencourt you are certainly in the vanguard. As you know from previous posts in this thread we have been hoping to have a gathering at Vadencourt towards the end of the summer. Maybe early September.

If you take a slow and steady cruise, you should be at Vadencourt at the scheduled time of opening, namely July 1st. You would do well to be early as there is an ANPEI cruise in company scheduled to leave Chauny on the 9th July heading for Erquelinnes.

I'll contact you off the forum as I would appreciate you checking a couple of things for me when you get to Vadencourt please.

If the rain hasn't stopped yet Terry the Resistance Museum in Tergnier may be an interesting visit. Just on to the Sambre-Oise you can moor short of the road bridge and from there it's about a 15-min stroll into the town centre.

Peter,
If you had read the report and slide presentations in the topic:
VNF - Canaux de Picardie, Champagne Ardennes et Marne User Meeting 22 March #122129
you would have found a clear mention in Sharon's brief summary of the opening being July 1st 2021. Also in the same topic I posted at #121987 the slide presentations for the meeting, the following screenshots being the relevant ones:

Do we know how "official" this re-opening date of July 2021 is? I ask because PC Navigo routing still doesn't show this route as available even for trips starting in August. They are normally pretty well advised of closures and re-opening dates. If the VNF has stated this as a definite date, I'm happy to advise the Navigo guys but a link to a VNF notice would probably be needed for them to open this route to Navigo users. My Navigo was updated last week so it should be fully up-to-date.

Thanks. Peter

Hi Bob, so long as we can get over then it’s quite likely that both Iskra and Panache too will be easily able to join in, we were reckoning on only a short cruise this year for obvious reasons and that little circuit from SLB and back would be very nice. Do you have any idea how ‘late’ you are thinking of? Many thanks.

Thanks Bob.

We have been intending for some time to make another trip across Belgium (La Louviere, Meuse etc.) and would most certainly make the deviation through the Sambre a L'Oise, quite possibly later this year circumstances permitting, and if possible coinciding with an informal gathering.

Whatever might be arranged the important thing is to use the waterway, solo or en masse, and get the channel scoured out again!

Dear Bob,

it's definitely an option for Daffodil, depending on when we get vaccinated, but would love to do it.

Best,

For 2022, there are discussions of a more formal DBA event, perhaps on the anniversary of the reopening, when there will hopefully be more members afloat and facilities are better known.

Meantime, I join with Bob in urging all who can to get there this year to celebrate the important reopening - and of course, report what they find en route in the DBA Waterways Guide!

Great idea Bob. We can't make it this year, but next year (Covid-19 and anno domini permitting), we're planning to transit both this and the Canal des Ardennes with a view to producing illustrated photo guides to both waterways.

So we'd definitely be up for it if for any reason it became a 2022 project.

The waterway which joins Belgium to France courtesy of the river Sambre and the Canal de la Sambre à l’Oise has remained closed to through navigation since 2006 when two aqueducts, Vadencourt and Macquigny, were deemed to be unsafe. Canal SET is a land based campaigning group which has tirelessly worked, with others, to persuade the powers that be that the canal route should be re-opened. This is now scheduled to happen in July 2021.

Wouldn’t it be good to have a gathering of members’ barges and boats at Vadencourt to say congratulations and thank you. I have been talking to Mme Francine Kimpe, Présidente of Canal SET who, in turn, has been talking to the Mayor of Vadencourt.

In the normal course of events we would schedule such a gathering and go ahead with the planning. Unfortunately, thanks to COVID 19, we cannot do that with any certainty as so many of our members live abroad from France and Belgium and currently cannot travel to their boats. Also, the restrictions in place in France preclude any gatherings.

However, come summer the situation may be different and by late summer an informal gathering of vessels may be able to work. This post is to ask how many members would like to navigate to Vadencourt on the Canal de la Sambre à l’Oise and meet with the people who made it possible.

Just leave a post here expressing your interest.

Best wishes,

Bob
