More in depth info' about the low bridge at Pont-sur-Yonne , hopefully the VNF will be allowed to lift it as proposed.
There is a good free pontoon mooring just downstream of the new bridge for anyone thinking of cruising this way.

Franck Semance is deputy general manager of the infrastructure pole at the Yonne departmental council. It is this pole that manages the roads. He explains the procedure that was followed. " When we build a bridge over a waterway, as the owner, we do not do that in our corner. We ask those who operate this waterway, ie VNF, to tell us what is the template to respect. This is what has been done. " According to the department, the studies, design and construction of the bridge were then all done according to these same templates.

For her part, Virginie Pucelle, deputy territorial director of the Center Bourgogne sector of the Voies navigables de France (VNF), reacts. "We are managers of the waterway, this new structure respects the regulations in force, because the jurisdiction requires a height of 4.70 meters, there the deck is placed at 5.10 meters. But it remains below the level of the bridge previous."

A height which imposes more restricted maneuvers to the boatmen according to the professional. To remedy the situation, the VNF had proposed to the Departmental Council to allocate a subsidy of one million euros to support the work of raising the decks, but this proposal was not retained. The boatmen will have to be extra vigilant when approaching this building, which in addition, is at an angle.

Another translation is,

"The necessary height above the water, was probably given by someone who had never been on a commercial ship navigating this stretch of water.

Possible someone who has never been on a barge."

This has been boiling up for many months.
As I understand it, the new bridge has been constructed strictly in accordance with the deck height regulations and VNF specifications and is legally and contractually 'correct'. Unfortunately, the old bridge was 380mm higher than that and the commercials that passed under now can't.
What I find amazing is that it appears that VNF may be offering to bear 1m€ of the raising cost!
Anyway, the court in Dijon to whom the matter has been referred by the batalliers will have an interesting case to examine and rule on.

Good morning.

A new bridge has been constructed that is 38 cm too low. You would think that this is impossible to do over a commercial waterway, evidently not.😮

The full story is here.
