A bit of an update on this issue from some brief testing with VPN connections.

It seems that the US and Canada now are allowed to access the VNF site. Mexico is not.

Australia and New Zealand, despite the number of our soldiers' bodies buried on French soil, are not deemed worthy of access to the VNF site.

We, like every hacker who wants to get to the site, will have to use a VPN. Stupid...

Hi Ian

Works with a VPN using a French address (but I agree not without, firefox win10, oz fixed ip address). Site looks pretty.
I note that an alerte is published, securisation means that the calculataire itineraire is unavailable.

I assume using geolocalisation (or a firewall allowing european addresses/disallowing US Oz etc) is active.

And yes, received warning about not buying vignette today too.

Cheers

The VNF site is still inaccessible to me in Australia. I didn't test elsewhere.

Ironically, in my email today is a communication (in French and English) from the VNF noting that I had not purchased a vignette this year and extolling the virtues of the good water levels in the reservoirs and that 300 million euros were being spent on improvements - with a link to click to find out more, which of course, is inaccessible.

FWIW, I penned a reply highlighting the current issues.

As promised I contacted a friendly VNF official in Lille by email explaining the problem of members in USA and in Australia not being able to access vnf.fr. I will copy his reply below.

The answer continues to be keep trying, access will become available eventually. Any member wishing to buy a vignette and not able to get onto vnf.fr is recommended to try when they have arrived in France.

Best wishes,

Bob

Reply email:

Hi Bob

We sure do have suffered from a really severe attack. Early may, everything was down (including email and local network) on a national scale.
All the services are proggressively restored, depending on priorities.
For instance, we do not have currently access to the internet from our computers at the office.
When i need to google sthg, I have to disconnect my computer from the network and to use my mobile phone as a wifi access point, then to connect back to the LAN to have access to our network resources…

Our teams are working hardly to fix everything, but work under control of the ANNSSI, a governmental organization that handles national numeric defense.
Progresses are made step by step, each step involving drastic security controls…
I so really don’t know when access to vnf.fr from foreign countries will be returned.

Kind regards

Sorry, I'm pretty sure installing Opera WON'T work.

I installed the OSX version and activated the VPN. You can only change locations to Asia, Europe and North America. In my testing, none of those would connect to the VNF site. Presumably, the European VPN hub that Opera uses is not in FR, NL, DE, BE or UK.

Googling confirms that Opera does not provide the ability to use a VPN hub in specific countries (as it's free!).

Not quite my experience with my (Nord) VPN.

Not Accessible: US, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Greece.
Accessible: UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany.

Details for Opera and VPN - HERE.
Use of Opera's VPN and change of location - HERE. This (recent) set of instructions says that the VPN is available for all platforms (OSX, Win10, iOS, Android) except the iPad. Strange.

If the VNF's level of sophistication in preventing hackers is limiting access based on location, then no wonder they were compromised. Even DBA'ers can circumvent that.

I sent a message yesterday to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. about the issue but that kind of communication can easily be missed. Bob making an approach through the back door would be a valuable backup.

@Pete

yes as many cloud providers they are restricting access to only some locations, they filter on your IP and the registration country. This is mostly driven by the constant hacking, cyber attacks and spamming from countries like russia, china etc.

Just as they do with search engines......do a search in the UK or USA or Oz do the same search in another country and you get totally different results.

So the only solution is using a VPN, where you can select the 'origin' point.

Still be good to know if VNF's 'original' translation can be accessed or mot, saves messing about with browsers.
Maybe Bob can shed some light on this on Monday.

(I can't emulate your circumnavigation to check myself, I'm afraid, all way beyond me).

Depending how I access VNF's website, in certain cases I can still also get the English version. But it's certainly no way to run a ship. Good luck, Bob, and thanks.

Accessible from UK but bits missing like no English translation.

I’ll try to contact someone on Monday.

Good idea from Pierre,

I pointed my VPN to France and the site loaded immediately. Seems that the US and OZ, at least, are persona non grata at the moment to the VNF!

Hopefully, someone who knows how to contact them at a technical level will let them know that they need to tweak their DNS or some other internet service to allow us back.

Can't get to it in Australia this morning (2 am Paris time). I was trying to follow some links Pete Clark posted - to no avail.

Logging on to the VNF website from Germany I see this (screenshot):

As Pierre says, the site is up and running but still has problems.

From France it's OK. They mention resolved technical problem's.
If they have block other country you can use the Opera browser free VPN to have an access IP from Europe.
Welcome in France ! ;-)

I have not been able to access the VNF site from America, on either Safari or Chrome. Has anyone else in America been able to get in? What about from other countries? Anyone have a work around.
In particular, people are looking for Avis info and chomage lists, mainly for this year. Does anyone have any idea where else they could be found?
The CLU meetings various people have been attending have, it seems, included the scheduled works for this year and next, but - the ones I have from the Seine-Champagne-Ardennes are just a bout too small to read.
