Hi Andy
Yes I saw that yesterday and it makes it a lot better and on phoning the PLA they did also say this would be 24/7, which is a great help with now being able to get the correct tidal window. Having thought about it though the 72hr pre booking could be an issue if a transit is cancelled and I should have asked how many have actually been cancelled.
I have emailed the PLA asking whether I could book multiple transits so that the 72hr wait could be overcome, and am waiting for a reply.

From the Emma Smith Task Force:
Lastly, we were pleased to note agreement has been reached to extend the window for controlled river transits. The river community can expect to receive further communication from the Port of London Authority shortly.

Hi Andy

Yes thanks for that and it concurs with what I have been told. Trouble is then what do you do for a week…let alone the cost…

Very unsatisfactory…

Hello Chris,
Just been talking to Ken Dwan at Eel Pie. His sons' fuel barge was allowed through on upstream on Sunday to fuel a ship but not allowed back down as all the movement alarms on the bridge were sounding. Looks like they are having multiple problems with false alarms - rather than the bridge collapsing!

I doubt that there is a cohesive policy on passages/cancellations.

Hi
Has anyone had any recent experience of getting under Hammersmith Bridge. I would like to get to Shepperton for a couple of months but I have heard that some booked Sunday passages have been cancelled at short notice.
I have asked for the criteria for cancellation but can’t get a reply and it would become very difficult let alone very expensive if suddenly you are forced to wait for at least a week before being allowed to pass..
Can anyone help in this.

Does anyone know how PLA are policing the Hammersmith bridge closure? picket boats, nets, anti shipping booms, searchlights and machine guns? or have they just hung up a bale of straw (or whatever it is they do in these situations)?

This sounds bizarre to me. I know the Great Ouse at Ely as I went to school there and we raced on the river. It's rather narrow for Eights at about 25 m and the river is far from straight with bends much sharper than those on the usual course.

Could be an exciting race then!!

The Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race organisers have just announced that next year's race will be held at Ely in April rather than the traditional Thames course because of the Hammersmith Bridge closure.

This sounds bizarre to me. I know the Great Ouse at Ely as I went to school there and we raced on the river. It's rather narrow for Eights at about 25 m and the river is far from straight with bends much sharper than those on the usual course.

Surely Henley or some other Thames venue would work much better than Ely? Perhaps there's no pound between Thames locks for the required 4.2 mile course. Ely is also an odd choice as it rather favours nearby Cambridge as their crews regularly practice there, but it's too distant for Oxford to do the same. The Thames is "neutral" territory for both crews. What strange times we live in!

Peter

Update on Hammersmith Bridge:
H&F Council advise this morning that there will be a restricted passage Downstream on the 26thNovember and an upstream passage on the 5th December. To register interest skippers of boats need to contact Anvar Alizadeh on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 0208 753 3303.
It is hoped that there will be a monthly passage in either direction until full river operations are reinstated.

Latest comment from PLA (no change!)

Date: Friday, 2 October 2020 18:23

The current situation is that Hammersmith Bridge remains closed to all river traffic. The formal position for river navigation is set out in this PLA Notice to Mariners: pla.co.uk/assets/u10of2020-barnelmsreach-hammersmithbridge-closedtonavigation.pdf

We fully appreciate the inconvenience and disruption this is causing river users. In particular we understand the particular frustration and difficulties faced by owners of boats ‘stranded’ the wrong side of the bridge and unable to return to a ‘home’ mooring.

The very sudden decision to close Hammersmith Bridge was taken at very short notice by structural engineers working for London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. Put briefly these engineers identified serious safety issues on the bridge. They have stated there is risk to the entire structural integrity of the bridge. Put another way – these engineers have highlighted that due to the cast iron construction of the bridge – there is a risk of very sudden collapse and without any warning.

This situation where the river is effectively closed indefinitely at Hammersmith to all river traffic is completely unprecedented. The PLA is in regular discussion with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham on all aspects of the current very difficult challenges. Meetings have also taken place with other key parties – including Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport.

The PLA continues to emphasise the need to find a workable solution for river users. However it would be wrong to suggest there is a simple or quick solution. Regrettably our current understanding is that the bridge – including all navigation of the river at Hammersmith - will remain closed for many weeks.

Owners of small boats – ie with a shallower draught and with either low air draught or who can lower their mast - may wish to consider using the canal system to ‘circumnavigate’ the closure. This means using the Paddington arm of the Grand Union Canal - via Brentford and Limehouse Locks. We are aware of a number of boats successfully getting ‘home’ via this route. This is of course subject to being locked in and out by the Canal and River Trust and there are size limitations on beam, draft and air draught – so is unsuitable for many vessels. More info at: canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/canal-and-river-network/paddington-arm-grand-union-canal

For ‘stranded’ boats that cannot use the canal: the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham are responsible for all matters regarding this crossing over the river – including the scale and duration of the closure. All owners of such ‘stranded’ boats should therefore send all details of their exact situation – and their contact details - direct to the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (LBHF):

Morning Andy

As a point of information, Pickled Pepper - a 60ft Piper managed to get an 'assisted passage' under Hammersmith Bridge around 2 weeks ago, so he could access the channel from his mooring on the Thames near to you. Not sure what hoops he had to jump through, but could find out if thought helpful.

Information received from Hammersmith & Fulham Council:

Hammersmith Bridge is closed to pedestrians and cyclists as well as to river traffic as it is unsafe for people to be underneath it. On Thursday 13 August 2020, specialist engineers concluded that the fractures they had been continuously monitoring in critical parts of the 19th Century suspension bridge structure had become a serious threat to public safety. The fractures had significantly increased in size due to the recent heatwave despite the range of measures they had taken to halt that from happening.

The Council’s engineering consultants have highlighted any passage under or over the bridge is unsafe as the bridge is in a vulnerable condition for navigational channels as well as highway use.

The navigational channels on either side of the bridge could be closed for at least 6 weeks. We are making every effort to find a solution to stabilise the bridge as quickly as possible.

We are also in discussions with PLA and our consultants to establish if a one-off passage under the bridge is possible and if a safe passage can be accommodate PLA will be policing any such passage using the traffic control team. Currently we are in discussion with PLA and our consultants developing a procedure for controlled safe one off passage under the bridge. Please note in view of the condition of the bridge, the one-off passage can be aborted just before transition under the bridge takes place as we are relying on data from monitoring equipment and if the sensors are triggered on the day of passage the operation will be aborted.

You will be notified of any one-off controlled passage and in the meanwhile a log of stranded vehicles is being collected and I would appreciate of you could provide the following information held to inform PLA about your vessel to assess the manner of passage under the bridge in a safe way.

Vessel Name

Length
Beam
Draught
Air Draft
Contact details of the Master
Where are they coming from and going to?
How long it will take to reach Hammersmith Bridge
Yours sincerely

I will write to Hammersmith and Fulham Council and the PLA after the weekend.

If the closure lasts for six months will you be affected?

Want to go to France?
Need to go for docking?
Cannot get back to your home mooring?
Just want to go through London.....
