Details from Haven Knox-Johnson:

As the days draw out and last frosts of winter thaw, it's high time to get back out on the water and enjoy the freedom of being afloat once again. However, have you planned and carried out those vital spring checks, to make sure everything is ship shape and ready for action? As the days draw out and last frosts of winter thaw, it's high time to get back out on the water and enjoy the freedom of being afloat once again. However, have you planned and carried out those vital spring checks, to make sure everything is ship shape and ready for action?
We all know winter can be harsh on your boat and its gear, so ensure all the necessary checks are undertaken to keep the gremlins at bay when you point the bow at the horizon, or up or down the canal or river!
We joined expert marine surveyor Ben Sutcliffe from Ben Sutcliffe Marine on a spring check of Dutch Barge, Viod II. We filmed him as he took us through the top areas to cast an eye on and take make any repairs necessary. Areas such as:
  • Anchors
  • Windlass
  • Chain Lockers
  • Protection of iron and steel
  • Corrosion- Antifouling
  • Brightwork / Coatings
  • Navigation Lights
  • Safety Equipment
  • Engines
  • Gear Linkage
  • Oil Level
  • Batteries
  • Fuel Tanks
  • Steering System

Although based on a Dutch Barge, many of the checks are relevant to all types of boat from the narrowboats of the inland waterways to the yachts based around the coast. Ben will join us to discuss his recommended spring checks with a bit of help from video clips of our tour of Viod II, before we open the floor to take all of your questions.
