Thanks Paul. I am sure they were great but Auxerre last year was amazing not least as we were moored nearby and saw all the reflections in the Yonne.

Not every town Peter

Saint Jean de Losne for one do not.
It was given Tax Free status by one of the King Louis' for defending the river crossing from foreign invaders.

The Revolutionary Government reversed this decision when they came to power. Hence Bastille Day is not calibrated in the town.

Something linked to the name SJDL gave to their town square - Place de la Délibération ?

On those years we have been in France for Bastille Day the Fireworks are the night before, or this year on the,Friday 2 days before, and yes the locks here at Toul were working normally.

We are happily moored up today and spent a nice morning in Vitry . But for future reference we just saw a boat! ( they are pretty rare at the moment) . So canal Lateral de la Marne is operational in 14 July.

Also running on the Latéral à la Loire. We're staying outside Decize in order to enjoy the guinguette (dancing) and fireworks this evening.

Although the 14th used to be a traditional locks closed day that has been changing.  We are on the Oise a la Sambre and they are open today, I asked.  Find the phone number for your local control point for the canal you are on and call them to verify they are open, but I expect you will find that they are.
There have been regular AVIS about the closings of passages and more importantly moorings for fireworks.  Some of the fireworks were last night, some will be tonight. You can check Avis a la Battelerie but it is not easy to search past Avis to get what you are looking for if you don't have the specific reference.

Though the fireworks may not be today. Our’s are always the night before in Auxerre on 13th. And great they were last night though lacking the 100 DBA’ers, 24 boats and excellent bbq that were here for it last year!

The French take the Day seriously and every town will put on a great firework display, so move to somewhere you'll get a ringside seat - if you can do that without finding locks that are closed.  Not sure how you'll be able to find out without a call to VNF or venturing towards one and trying to pass.

Stay put.
1.  It is Sunday.
2.  Find some fireworks.

A late question as the 14th is tomorrow . We are are sitting in a perfectly good mooring near Vitry (Canal Lateral de la Marne) . Just realised the date . I do t want to set off and find myself moored up against a lock gate tomorrow. I have a strong feeling that all will be closed but my VNF   Searches weren’t easy (!) . Doubtless others will know and can advise me if I should stay put. Thanks in advance.
