Canal closure (Marne au Rhin Est at Waltenheim sur Zorn)

Speaking to a boater who had his boat lifted out and relaunched to get round this closure, he says (I think from VNF) that the section is being re-watered over this weekend and will open on Monday (4th). Probably wait for the Avis.

Correspondance received from VNF by one of the boaters in Strasbourg indicates that this blockage should be cleared and the canal reopened sometime between 18th and 25th May.

WOBs are reporting that, as of conversations with VNF yesterday 14th April, this closure will be for an ‘unknown length of time’ - so I personally wouldn’t bank on it being open by the beginning of May 🤔

Hi Jeff,

At the DT Strasbourg CLU meeting on 2nd April VNF stated that this closure would last 'several weeks' but it did not sound too serious. My ability to understand spoken French is not great so I may have misinterpreted the significance of this closure and I have not yet seen the written record of the meeting to review what was actually said.

My boat is currently in Strasbourg and I was planning to head west on 7th May so if you have additional information please share it (or send me a private message)

If you are thinking, planning or intending to travel on the Canal de la Marne au Rhine between Nancy and Strasbourg in France this season, I suggest you rethink your plans. There is a breakage at Waltenheim-sur-zorn and the canal is "blocked off" for the foreseeable future as they decide WHO is responsible to fix it as the breakage is under a bridge. Local city or VNF!!!
